1. Distinguish between single-mode/multi-mode (core)
Single mode (OS2, yellow skin): Long distance transmission, 1 kilometer to tens of kilometers, preferred for household entry, weak current well long wiring, and whole house networking, with low loss.
Multimode (OM1/OM2 Orange, OM3/OM4 Water Blue): Short distance (within 100 meters), commonly used for short jumper cables in data center switches and servers, causing a sharp drop in network speed over long distances.
Choose single-mode and single core directly for 99% of household scenarios.
2. The connector type matches, but I bought the wrong one and couldn't plug it in
Common connectors:
SC Big Head: Operators' Optical Cat and Home Fiber Optic are the most commonly used
LC Small Square Head: Dedicated for SFP Modules in Switches and Routers
ST round head: rarely used for monitoring in old projects
Before placing an order, confirm the interfaces at both ends, such as SC-SC and SC-LC, to avoid purchasing the wrong one and failing to install it.
3. Single core or dual core
Single core (one receiver and one transmitter on the same line): Home use, mainstream fiber optic transceiver, saves money and wiring space.
Dual core (one transmitter and one receiver): commonly used in enterprise switches and high-speed transmission, with higher costs.
Single core fiber optic jumpers are preferred for ordinary home networking.
4. Fiber optic material: Core grade and outer sheath material
Identify OS2 single-mode compliant fiber cores for fiber cores, as low-quality miscellaneous brands have significant attenuation and are prone to packet loss and disconnection.
Skin differentiation:
PVC ordinary outer skin: indoor wiring, not resistant to high temperatures, not suitable for outdoor exposure to sunlight
LSZH low smoke halogen-free: essential for corridors, weak current boxes, and fire protection areas, flame retardant and safe
PE black outer cover: specifically designed for outdoor elevated and buried waterproofing and sun protection
5. Choose the length according to your needs, don't be too long or just get stuck
Reserved redundancy: For example, if the actual distance is 15 meters, choose 20 meters to avoid increasing optical loss due to tension and bending.
Do not use excessive force or small radius bending to store excess coils that are too long (the glass fiber core inside the optical fiber is prone to breakage).
6. Craftsmanship and workmanship, avoiding pitfalls and inferior products
Smooth end face: If the end face is dirty, scratched, or bumped, it will significantly reduce the network speed and frequently disconnect
Bending toughness: cannot be bent hard, minimum bending radius ≥ 3cm
Brand reliability: Miscellaneous recycled fiber cores have severe attenuation and long-term instability
Is there a detection report: Regular jumpers come with insertion loss parameters, and the lower the loss, the more stable the transmission
